Chapter 5

Cody, Hunter and Samantha sat underneath a big tree watching their poles. “I wouldn’t mind being a fish,” Samantha said, staring out over the lake. “I love to swim, eat and play. That’s all that fish do.”

“Yeah, that would be pretty cool,” Hunter grinned. “But I wouldn’t be stupid enough to get caught.”

“You mean, if you were a fish and a big juicy worm was swaying back and forth in front of your eyes, you wouldn’t munch it?” Cody asked.

“Nope. I would mess with whoever was trying to catch me,” Hunter grinned.

“Yeah, right! And how would you do that?” Cody rolled his eyes.

“First of all, I wouldn’t be dumb enough to bite into something with a big shiny hook. Duh!” Hunter snorted. “I’d just move it a little making them think that they were getting a bite, and then I’d slowly move it where they’d get snagged, jerk the line real hard, and wham! They break their fishing line.”

“So you’re telling me that if you were a fish, you’d be smart enough to do that.” Cody stood to check his poles. “I don’t think so. Fish are smart, but not that smart.”

“If I could be a fish, I’d be a goldfish,” Samantha sighed.

“A goldfish?” Hunter tossed a pebble into the lake. “Why a goldfish?”

“Hey guys, something got my bait.” Cody showed them his empty hook. “We need to pay more attention to our poles.”

“Because a goldfish is like a pet.” Samantha ignored Cody and continued with her story. “I’d be someone’s pet goldfish swimming around in my own little bowl. Just think; no school, no homework and no cleaning my room.”

“Yeah, but what would you do if you ended up on the end of a fishing pole?” Cody asked, tossing his baited pole into the water.

“What do you mean?”

“Goldfish is a great bait for catfish.” Cody sat back down. “I use them all the time.”

“You mean, they sell goldfish for bait?” Samantha looked horrified. “That’s not only mean; that’s murder!”

“Whatever!” Hunter snorted again. “If I got to pick any fish in the world I wanted to, I would be a shark. Not a sissy goldfish.”

Samantha stuck her tongue out at Hunter. “Yeah, but nobody likes sharks. Everybody likes goldfish.”

“Big deal. Everybody fears a shark. Nobody would mess with me, and nothing would eat me.” Hunter then stuck his tongue out at Samantha. “Anything could eat a dumb goldfish.”

“That’s not really true,” Cody added. “Humans mess with sharks all the time. Some sharks are becoming extinct because humans kill them.”

“Well, they wouldn’t get me,” Hunter demanded. “I’d never be seen by human eyes. I’d swim where humans couldn’t go.”

“What kind of fish would you be?” Samantha asked Cody.

“That’s easy.” Hunter rolled his eyes. “He’d be a catfish. Right?”

“That’s right.” Cody puffed up proudly.

“Well, I think a catfish would be boring,” Hunter snorted. “Not as boring as a goldfish, but still boring. Catfish get caught all the time, so you wouldn’t be alive for long. Some big fisherman would probably catch you, toss you in a frying pan and fry you up for lunch.
